Three Towns Founded the Same Year, Three Different Flooring Stories

Three Towns Founded the Same Year, Three Different Flooring Stories

It's a coincidence worth noting: Olathe, Gardner, and De Soto were all founded in 1857, within the same few months of each other, yet they diverged completely in how fast they grew. Olathe became the county seat within two years and is now the fourth-largest city in the metro. Gardner grew steadily at the historic split of three western trails. De Soto, by contrast, wasn't even formally incorporated until 1897, four decades after its founding, and grew far more slowly than its two neighbors. That gap in growth speed is exactly why flooring age varies so much between these three towns even though they share a founding year: Olathe and Gardner have more mid-20th-century additions layered over their original cores, while De Soto's slower growth left more of its older housing stock relatively undisturbed. Knowing which growth pattern your town followed is a useful shortcut before guessing what's under your floor.
